..LU JIANG .Interview on Quanzhou Clan
Q:Master Wang, there were several sculpting clans in china.? To our understanding A apart from the Quanzhou clan there were two other clans. May we ask the founder of the Quanzhou Clan Master Fu Qing. Did he learn from anyone else or is he self-taught?

Project Introduction   You made a good question. Whether Master Fu Qing was self-taught or had learned from someone. To tell you the truth, sculpting is like learning Kong Fu. For an art as great as sculpting it's impossible to be self-taught. Since there is a clan, to my understanding Master Fu Qing wasn't the first generation clan head. In the previous generation China was under war, and the Eight-Power Allied Forces attacked China. At the time China was in a terrible state. Master Fu Qing didn't pass the details to his inheritor. Therefore, at this point it would be hard to trace the true founder of its clan. It's not entirely true, because the art of sculpting can be traced back to the Tang Dynasty. Therefore we can see that we can trace the origin of sculpting to thousands of years back. Nevertheless the trace of history is broken, and since we respect our teacher so we asked Master Fu Qing to act the head of the clan. No evidence can be found in history to prove whether Master Fu Qing was the true founder of the clan. Master Fu Qing was situated at a time of war, the time of the 1911 revolution and a time of the perishing of the Manchu. Master Fu Qing didn't even have the luxury of three meals, how would he be able to sculpt god statues. So, it was a time of war and escape. Master Fu Qing came to Taiwan and passed on the skills to father. The second generation great master was actually the learning brother of my father. Since my father have the tendency to call ones elder than him master, this resulted in an extra generation of master. Our clan was like the shaolin, we don't pass don't the craft to outsiders and we only pass on to sons and not daughters in the fear that the skills passed elsewhere and is defiled. We were also afraid that the god statues were defiled by the greed for money and profits. The aim of our clan is now like this: We are not afraid that our skills are learned by others, as long as there is someone will to inherit the skill we will teach them one on one and pass on the good skills to our apprentices, because if we don't pass on the skill, the art will be lost forever. I think the generation has changed. If my own children don't want to learn the craft, I would teach it to schools. I had worked with many schools to glorify my spirit and art, and to pass it down to the next generations. Not only am I going to pass down to the men but also the women and all the students of the next generation. As long as you want to learn, the Chinese history will not be lost. Sculpting of god statues follows the virtues of loyalty, being good to parents, and justice. Don't defile the gods. Worship Guan Yu to make money. Worship Guanyin to help people and learn of their spirits. Don't demonize them. Don't mystify them. That's not good and it wouldn't last. The most important thing is to pass down the spirit and the meaning of the god statues. This way the path of this artistry will not be lost. Therefore, there are two benefits to the making of god statues. First, you can learn from their spirits, learn from their beauty and witness the evidence of their history. When you carve Yue Fei of the Song Dynasty you would know his appearance and the type of armor he wore. If you carve Guan Yu you will know the armor wore by Guan Yu in the romancing of the three kingdoms and know his appearance. In the past there were no cameras. However in our sculptures we are more detailed than the camera. Because when you take a picture you can only take one side. But, when you sculpt you will be sculpting five sides; the front, the back , the left and the right.

..Project Elements   Q:Master Wang, I know that you are the fourth generation clan head of the Quanzhou clan. Have you already chosen a candidate for the fifth generation clan head? Would it be your own son or someone else? I heard there were difficult ceremonies. What are the qualifications? Can you tell us about it?

HOME

Since you know that I am the fourth generation clan head, you know that there isn't a fifth generation clan head just yet. On the streets of Lujhou the local government had already made a copper plaque stating that the fifth generation clan head is my son. Although the eldest son usually inherits the title, my second child, Rong-min Wang will be inheriting the title. In respect to the qualifications and the inheritance ceremony, if it's passed down to an outsider it would be more complicated. You will have to consider the person, his character and whether he has the gift. You have to also be smart. I watched my child grow and gradually noticed his talent. My own child is also a special case so no complicated ceremony is required. Unless one day he had already mastered the skill to appoint which he must follow the traditional ceremony. For outsiders you will have to offer incense and pray and let your grandchildren inherit it. I will also tell you about the outer qualities of the inheritor. As I had previously mentioned the inheritor be diligent, possesses good characters, and be smart. He also must have good eyes. A pair of sharp eyes is crucial, because if you have faulty eyes your precision with knife would be poor hence cut yourself and hinder your ability to carve delicate details. Therefore, to be able to carve you must have sensitive hands and eyes. Therefore, the most important criteria to becoming a sculpting apprentice is to have good eyes, be smart, have good a character and be truthful.
