Project Narrative

This is a work from the Qing dynasty made using linen and cloth. There are different sayings for the origin of the saying "Three inch gold lotus". In one of the stories it was said that Li Yu, the last Emperor of the South Tang dynasty saw a beautiful maid in a feast. The way she walked completely mesmerized every male at the feast. Later, it was discovered that the way she walked was due to her pair of tiny feet. Thus, Li Yu ordered that every woman would bind their feet as well. Since the embroidered shoes ladies wore at those days were gold in color, these shoes became known as three inch gold lotuses.

Note: there were three types of bound feet.
3 inches were called gold lotuses, and were shoes for high born ladies.
Those between 3 and 4 inches were silver lotuses, and were shoes worn by maidservants.
Those between 4 to 6 inches were copper lotuses, and were shoes worn by old maidservants.

This is a work from the Ming dynasty made using bamboo. A bamboo shirt was also known as a sweat-shirt. The Forbidden City in Beijing can be very hot in summer, and the Emperor must wear a sweat-shirt to prevent his sweat from staining his imperial robes. As the dragon robe cannot be washed using water, hence a sweat-shirt would help keep the robe from coming in contact with the body. Sweat shirts are made using woven bamboo, and can help with ventilation whilst preventing sweat from soaking the clothes. A sweat shirt takes about 365 working days to complete.
