Master Wang was born in 1947 on Desheng Street of Lujhou district in new Taipei city. Famous carving master Fu Qing of Quanzhou of the Qing Dynasty is the founder of the Quanzhou clan which Master Wang belonged to. Master Fu Qing's specialties were god statue sculpting, bodiless, and paint line. His carvings were delicate and precise. Master Fu Qing' work is now exhibited in the Keelung City God Temple; a representative of the elites of the Quanzhou Clan. He passed down his skills to the second generation of the clan Master Lian Tze. Master Lian Tze is a sincere and trustworthy man with exceptional sculpting skills. At the time there were a lot of people who asked to be his apprentice. In the fear of losing this magnificent craft, Master Tze passed on his skills to the third generation Mr. Dao Rui. Mr. Dao Rui who inherited genuine skills of Master Lian Teze has a unique style and charm in his works.

Under the traditional concept of not passing on the craft to outsiders Mr. Dao Rui passed on his title as the head of the Quanzhou movement to his eldest son, Master Liang-chuan Wang as the fourth generation head of the movement. At a young age Master Wang was able to imitate the exceptional sculpting techniques of the Quanzhou clan. Also with his passion for the art and drive for creative, Master Wang's creative sculptures are modern yet reserve the beautiful characteristics of the traditional art. Despite his profound knowledge of the art, to enhance the level of his works for the past ten years Master Wang has continued to search for the inner meaning of the craft. His works are beloved by religions groups and art collectors worldwide.

Project Narrative

Q:Master Wang, is learning sculpting hard work? What made you want to learn this craft?

Master Wang:
As long as you have the heart, you won't think it's hard. As long as you have the passion you won't think it's hard. Sculpting is different from drawing and studying. It's not hard at all.
There is a saying if you're persistent even pestles can be grounded into needles. The first reason that I wanted to learn sculpting may be my inheritance of my father's blood. The second reason is the benefits of learning from my father. He is kinder and is more willing to answer my questions carefully. I call my father master. The word master to me means the one who gave me life and took care of me, and a teacher is only one who teaches me the art of sculpting. Therefore when I say the word master I am friendlier than anyone else. The reason I chose this path, as I said before is the inheritance of my father's artistic cells; what we now call genes and blood line. Therefore it's a path of no return. When you're under twenty, you're younger and it's easy to train yourself, because you have better hearing and eye sight. Therefore if you don't make good use of this youthful period and give up halfway, your life will be done for! That is why I said sculpting is not the same as drawing or painting. You can get off the wagon halfway and you shouldn't waste twenty years of your life. Therefore as we Chinese say to become an apprentice is no easy business. Because of my father's passion for the art and my willingness to accept the inheritance of the craft I followed his path. Of course the most important part is that you have to be interested.

Q:You mentioned that you learned the craft from your father. Under what kind of circumstances did you come to learn under his guidance?

When I was young I worked while I studied. Because my father sculpted most of the time so it didn't matter whether I do well academically, I followed the lives of my parents. Under those circumstances you see more and grow to love the art. It didn't matter whether I was studying or getting off from school when I get home I was usually with my parents. Because of having my father as an example, and my gift of art and interest of the craft my father would constantly test me. He wanted to know if I was truly willing to learn the craft, and then he would observe me. The most important thing about parents is that they should force their children to learn things they didn't want to learn. Therefore the main reason that I learned the art is because of my own interest. Furthermore, the reason that my father chose me as the inheritor of the craft is because I am his child and he didn't force me to learn the craft. You just can't force a person to learn sculpting. My father had noticed my interest and gift in the field of art.

Q:Master Wang when you first started to learn to sculpt, what type of sculpture did you first make?

Before you learn to sculpt you must first learn to draw. It is very important. Prior to learning to sculpt you also have to learn pottery. In pottery you work with clay! You put things together and if there is too much you take some off! Up till now I can already comprehend that clay sculpting is like addition because you can add and subtract. On the other hand carving is subtraction because you care slowly cutting away from a big piece of wood! This is something which I worked out myself. Also when we learn to carve it's very difficult because what to you is a piece of wood but to me a perspective image, a 3dimentional image.? In another word when I am about to sculpt a god sculpture, a person, or an animal all you see is a piece of wood but what I see is a god sculpture within the wood. That piece of wood has become an image. For example when we write a word, first there is no form and then it has form. On a piece of white paper you want to write the word"ao" but you only see the white piece of paper and there is no form. Do you understand what I mean now?? You imagine a piece of wood as a piece of white paper and a scalpel as a pen. So if you want to sculpt you must possess these two skills and gradually try to sculpt things such as animals.

Q:Master Wang, what are the benefits of learning to sculpt?

There are too many benefits in the sculpting of god statues. In the sense of the word, China possesses the greatest number of god statues. The profession of sculpting god statues had been around for thousands of years. Firstly, we are different from the other countries, because we Chinese since long had possessed the exceptional knowledge sculpting techniques. When camera was not invented, the Chinese knew how to record the images using sculptures. Secondly, we are good at sculpting the good people and not the bad. What kind of people do we sculpt? Well, the loyal, the children who were good to their parents, the people who are of contribution to the human race. We sculpt them into statues to commemorate them. It's like a real life camera. Such as Guan Yu, we should learn his ways of being a loyal and just man. We should learn from him. We should learn the spirit of Guan Yu.? There is also the Bodhisattva of India.? From history we learned of her mercifulness. We didn't worship her to become rich! Not for the winning the lotteries. That would be wrong. We should learn from her spirit. Therefore there are many benefits. Thirdly, the favorite Chinese god is the God of Earth. They love worshiping the God of Earth the most. Why? Because he loves to help and give to the poor.? We should also learn from the spirit of the God of Earth, learn of his love and mercifulness. There are just so many benefits. There are over ten thousand types of god statues in China and that means there are over ten thousand good people. Let me give an example, when you sculpt a god statue, you sculpt, you write, and you look. What do you look at? Look at its historical background. This is a goal which I thrive to achieve when I learn to sculpt, and it's also a benefit of sculpting! Before there were cameras you either draw or sculpt. When you draw the picture is two dimensional and when you sculpt the image is three dimensional. Since the time of the Han dynasty, if there were no cameras or sculptures do record our history, we wouldn't know what kind of clothes the Han people wear. When we sculpt god statues we also learn about the clothing styles of the Han people. We also have to learn the principle of being a Han and how to become a good person, and finally became a person worshiped by all. This is the benefits of learning to sculpt.

Q:We heard that you have a profound knowledge of historical records. Is it of any help to your work? Can you tell us about it?

The Chinese history of sculpting is very long. Sculpting is related to fine arts. In the sense of the ecology of animals including birds and beasts are all expressed through the forms of paints or sketches. For the example of the traditional Chinese paintings, it's not merely a matter of techniques. You have to first understand its historical background, and its dynamic and static states. Such as the "Bodhisattva" and "Romance of the three Kingdoms".? You have to understand stand the character's backgrounds. They all follow the virtues of being loyal, being good to their parents, and being just.? So you can never sculpt the sculpture of a bad person. Therefore, each and every god statues are a contribution to our education and society. Why did I study the historical records? The reason is to search for our roots; to treasure it and understand it. The more books you read the better you can sculpt and represent the true meaning of the character. Why? It is because, since the beginning of time the dynasty are so far apart. If you don't search for its history and you sculpted Romance of the Three Kingdoms as the Han Dynasty, and the Han Dynasty as the Song Dynasty, the image would be all wrong. You will be a laughing stock. So you mixed up the dynasties and your work is passed down to the next generation, they too will be wrong. You will be sending the wrong messages. Just like what people say "Repeated on baseless assertions. In the past it wasn't as developed as today. There were no cameras or video cameras. Therefore, through the historical records we can understand the record, find the root and find the meaning behind it all. Next, our sculptures we make are like pieces of evidence. If you ask me material learned from the text or school, these knowledge can't be kept forever. For example, after the interview you will make a record of the interview if not the information from the interview would be gone. Only true records can be kept on this earth for generations to come. The most import thing is that sculpting god statues is to give people a model to learn and look up to and promote kindness in the hearts of the people.
