Project Narrative ..LU JIANG .Verbatim transcript of the Recordings of Kongming chair
. Related Information Teacher, is this a chair?
Wrong! But I can lie to you and say that it is a chair! Let's assume that it's a chair! Actually… Listen carefully! During the war, if you're tired you can use it as a chair. You can really sit on it, but it's really not a chair! During the war of the three kingdoms, Kongming led the army to fight in Yunnan. He came across a humid land. You know what humid is! It rains every day and is wet all the time. Is it a cowhide? Cowhides are not good in damp places! Don't mind the dampness; this is what you call smart! The Kongming drum was invented. What is another name for it? Ah! It's called the Kongming chair! This is why the Sky-Lantern in Pinghsi was original called the Kongming Lantern. This drum was invented for the purpose of the war. Let the teacher show it to you. It's very loud! Don't be too surprised! Ok! After the war do you need to eat? Yes, so you flip it over and you can cook soup in it at night. So very smart! You can cook vegetable soup with the long ones, and roast meat, make fry rice and vegetables stir fries with the wide ones. Do you understand now! So this is not a bench. The bench is too simple, and doesn't have much function. The Kongming Chair has a lot more functions: during the war. May I ask you to beat on this big drum with your hands? A drum can scare away the enemy, because ten thousand drums would sound like a hundred thousand drums. The phrase the drum sounded all around. The first word is drum, so when we are in a war we would want to win and we would of course beat the drums. Why do we beat the drums? To run! In the olden days if you want the enemy troops to retreat you would sound the drums to charge. Why is there a knot here?? First it's for convenience and second with the rope on the drum you can put it on like a backpack. This way the use of drum sticks won't be necessary; you can beat the drum with your hand.? Let me ask you students. Is it enough for each person to carry one drum? It's enough! Everyone was strong and powerful; if not how can they fight? So when you beat the drum you don't need drum sticks. Hey! So good!? The teacher said, "you all understand now right?" What is this called? It's called a Kongming drum. It looks like this. You can check the web. Ah! Yunnan! You have to go to Yunnan to understand it! Outside there is a huge landmark and the copper drum has become Yunnan's new landmark. Next in line is the puerh tea. This tea was the properties of two ladies from Yunnan. Now it's mine. Why is that? This is Kunming. Where is Kunming? It's in Yunnan! I moved the Kunming emperor here. That's what we call Cultural Revolution. They didn't want the wenwu. All they want is money, so they sold it. Like what I said before in class, you have to treasure and value ancient artifacts. What for? To witness history. What I want to say today is this. If you want to have something as evidence you should visit the museum and look at its artifacts.
